Virginia Natural Gas Promotes Safe Digging on National 8/11 Day

Planning to dig? Call 8-1-1 first!
August 8, 2013

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Aug. 8, 2013 – On Aug.11, Virginia Natural Gas is reminding homeowners and professional contractors of the importance of calling 8-1-1 before any outdoor digging project, big or small, to help prevent serious injury, costly property damage and inconvenient utility service interruptions.

The date coincides with National 8/11 Day, a convenient way to promote safe digging and the use of the 8-1-1 hotline, a free service that protects underground utility lines and the residents digging near them.

To help promote awareness about the day and safe digging, Virginia Natural Gas has launched a fun photo campaign for employees, which involves taking photos that display the 811 logo in various and unanticipated ways.

“To us, August 11 is not just another date on the calendar; it’s our time to promote the importance of safe digging year round,” said Jodi Gidley, president of Virginia Natural Gas. “Even for the smallest projects, making a quick and easy call to 8-1-1 and safely digging around underground utility lines is the most proven way to maintain reliable service and ensure safety.”

When calling 8-1-1, residents are connected to their local one-call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with color-coded spray paint, flags or stakes that correspond to the utility. The color used for natural gas is yellow.
Once lines have been accurately marked, residents are urged to use the appropriate methods, which may include digging with hand tools, to excavate carefully around or near underground facilities, such as natural gas, water, cable, telephone and electric lines.

If a natural gas line is accidentally damaged or the distinct odor of gas is present, call 9-1-1, then Virginia Natural Gas at 1-877-572-3342 from a safe location.
